FreeFor24Hrs Crochet Pattern: Hot Dog Scarf

TwinkieHotDogsm

I’m often kinda torn between posting all my patterns for free or putting them up on Etsy. And then if I distinguish between which patterns I put where….. I think some lines start to get blurry. While I love sharing inspiration and projects, I feel like my time and ideas are valuable, too, and while I have wonderful blog sponsors, it’s not like I make that much money from my blog nor do I post content often enough to make that logical. Pattern-selling in general is probably not going to ever be a living wage for me, but I do think that there is worth to our designs. I’m also not at the point yet where I want random advertising popping all over my blog. So, yes, this is a long rant. Sorry about that! I tend to over-share, but I’m still just trying to figure everything out, to get you guys the patterns you like, and to also make sure it is worth my time and energy and that I can pay for my wifi etc etc! 😛

For now, for scarf patterns in particular, I like the “FreeFor24Hrs” format. It’s like a “thank you” to the people who follow my blog and social media. This is a fairly easy pattern, and sometimes I like putting the easy patterns up for free, but since it’s also a scarf, I do like the idea of keeping all my signature scarves on Etsy. Again, I’m still playing with all of this.

tl;dr

Edit: FreeFor24Hrs is now over! Thanks so much, everyone! Find the pattern now in my Etsy shop. It was originally commissioned by Homespun Magazine last Fall, so if you were not able to get the magazine, now you can get the pattern!

You work very hard on your patterns and they are definitely worth buying. I do like the free patterns as they help me learn more about crochet without breaking the bank. LOL. I have bought patterns from others and I also have both of your fabulous books. 🙂

Thank you so much, Twinkie. We have one of your books and have been looking for another one. We did not see it at either our Hobby Lobby or Micheals stores though. Will have to go out of town to find it. Love all your patterns. You are so creative and adorable.

I’m not sure either of my books were ever carried at those stores. My 1st book was carried at some JoAnn, but online is probably the easiest rather than brick and mortar 🙂

Hey Twinkie. That’s a tough question on intellectual property. What you do is unique, creative and so original. Its also very altruistic of you to share and to teach. They always say that a good magician never reveals all their tricks so save some of the magic for yourself. And if someone really wants a pattern bad enough, they can purchase an artist original or figure it out. I think sometimes the perception of the medium (crochet) is under valued and degraded as not being “art.” Your patterns are original thoughts that you create and make real just as a musician writes and creates a song. It’s the same thing, the same process, and muse just different tools. Ultimately, you have to follow your heart and find your happy middle ground. I think it speaks volumes though how many people truly love your work and want to copy it. Good luck and rock on girlfriend!

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Julie! Intellectual property, patterns, projects… that has all been on my mind since Day 1. It’s complicated and weird… and we aren’t offered much legal protection anyway as crochet designers. There’s a lot to consider, and so many people just doing whatever regardless. Thank you for your support!

Thank you so much for sharing your pattern, Twinkie! I went ahead and purchased it on Etsy to show my support for your valuable time and creative energy. Your patterns are the biggest reason I was inspired to learn how to crochet!

I do have one question regarding this pattern, though – is there a reason why we chain 3 at the beginning of each row? HDC only requires 2 chains before/after turning.

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Thanks so much, Emma!! Well, I wrote the pattern over a year ago. I assume that I thought it just looked better for this particular project, but you can use whatever you feel is best, too 🙂

Hi Ms. Twinkie, I really, really love the hot dog scarf and how it was made, but I didn’t see the blog that it was free for 24 hours and not it’s on the Etsy shop. Well I was hoping that you will be able to put it back again for free since some crochet fans missed it. But maybe you will put it out on your next crochet fashion book like a pizza scarf. OK thanks again and may God bless you and family.
