WIWT: Mel Stringer Bedroom Girl

When I made these hair pompoms the other day, I for some reason immediately felt transformed into a Mel Stringer girl, and I decided to take outfit photos a la Mel’s Bedroom Series.

Mel2Mel1There are OFTEN times when I’ll be like, “You’re never buying anything pink or child-like again. You’re almost 40 years old, and you look ridiculous.”

mel3mel6And then I’ll see this totally amazing dress with vintage toys all over it that I HAVE TO HAVE. AND WEAR. WITH PRIDE. FOREVER.

mel5mel9I have been told by a few naysayers that I should grow up, but who determined what grown-ups are allowed to wear or not? What is a grown-up supposed to look like? Who decided that bunnies and puppies and pastel rainbows were solely the territory of children? I don’t have to go to an office, and I can do what I want, so I should just do what I want and wear what I want! For as long as I can…!Β  I will allow YOU to do the same! πŸ™‚

mel7Obvs, if I decide to go back to the office at some point, my wardrobe may have to revert back to what it once was, but for now, it’s rainbow pompoms, candy jewelry, and crocheting the night away.

Dress: Mr. Gugu & Miss Go from Truffle Shuffle, Necklace c/o Art School Drop Out, Bracelet c/o EllegraDavis, Socks: Sock Dreams, Giant glasses: vintage, Hair pompoms: me, made of handspun yarn.

That’s right, WEAR WHATCHA LIKE!!! Who made these “rules” anyway???

    • I know! Like, I’m bummed that the pretty colors and pastels for yarn are always the BABY yarn!

      • MsKat

        says:

Ah but baby weight yarn makes wonderful drapey scarves, shawls, hats, and sweaters! πŸ˜‰

        • I was referring to more of the marketing of it πŸ˜›

<3 the dress. Freakin' cute–I need one. πŸ™‚ BTW, I go to work wearing clothes like that, haha. Some people like it, some people poke fun saying it's too cute/pink. Those people are no fun.

Great job on the hair pompoms! πŸ™‚

    • Aw, you have a fun place of work then!!! My old boss definitely wanted a more formal, business-y, Manhattan office look! Not that I ever came close to that…. but… I know it was what she would have wanted!

    says:

Ahhh I am almost dead with jealousy over that dress. I have been going through such a phase where I want to recollect all of the toys I grew up with in the 80s and 90s.

PFFFFT if you start dressing “age appropriate” I will never read your blog again and probably glare a lot. I love your style so much, it’s uniquely you and always makes me smile! Age ain’t nothin’ but a number. You don’t work in a stuffy corporate office environment so why would you NOT dress the way you want???

I’m so happy that my work is really easy going even though I’m technically a professional. I tone it down a bit during the week but on Friday’s it’s causal dress and I wear whatever I want. I can never go back to being a corporate drone!

    • Sometimes I feel like I have no choice. Like if I dressed any other way, I would feel ugly and miserable. But I am also fond of the idea of evolution and change, and I think that is okay, too. We’ll just have to see what happens!

i think you have to wear and be who you are regardless of age how else can we explain all the amazing things made for all ages in this world! plus adults designed those toys your wearing and someones art and passion. While following your own!

I say wear what you want and don’t care what others think. It reminds me of the other day I made a ascot scarf to wear and this guy made a comment, that I was dressed up with it on.I didn’t care what he thought but I was like if that is dressed up I’d hate to see what his dressed down is.haha

I am 56 and a red hatter, the rules these days are be wild and crazy dress in purple and wear a red hat, so you do the same and wear what you want because who says what you wear at what age.

    • Yasmine

      says:

There is a lady at my knitting/crochet circle, who also is a good friend, who is a red hatter, she has a lovely cross stitch sampler proclaiming so. I’ve never seen her wear anything but purple!

Love everything about this twinkie. And I most importantly love you. any n all that you do is always amazing because you stay true to who you are. Who cares how old you’re close to being you sure don’t look near that age n even if ya did wearing what others wanted or expected grown ups to wear wouldn’t be as fun.there’s enough boring plain people out there so why not stand out and be cute while doin so? And plus you are your own boss of a successful biz, they just hating girrrl. Whether you know it or not you are a true inspiration to myself n many others by just bein yourself n doin what ya do.

P.s. Those pom poms are the cutest!

Wear what you want girl! You look awesome, you are totally my style/art/business icon. And by no means do you look 40! You look 20, so I say rock it. One of my favorite quotes is “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.” Who knows what an adult is “supposed” to look like anyway :). My hair used to be bright purple dip dyed, then I stupidly decided to get rid of it to get a “real” job. That hasn’t worked out for me yet so I might just do my hair crazy again, I miss it. Keep rocking your style!!

Whatevs, in the words of a high school yearbook inscription, DON’T CHANGE 4 NO 1.
That dress is pretty darn amazing. As are you, my friend. So see, it all makes sense!

    • ONe of the tshirt company ideas I wanted to pursue a few years ago was shirts all with yearbook art and doodles and sayings on them. STAY COOL!

  • Cherie

    says:

Cutest dress and you look perfect in it!
Time and age is really just something humans invented. Does being ‘grown up’ mean not enjoying things you love anymore? If something makes you happy, why wouldnt you hold on it! We are kids 4 eva

  • cLare

    says:

you cant be nearly 40!? thats insane! that dress is amazing though! πŸ™‚

  • Heidi

    says:

I’m dealing with the same. I’m 35 in December and I’m not sure at what point my neon hair and facial piercings become ridiculous. But it’s hard because my outside matches who I am. And why would I give that up just because people think I’m too old for this shit. Also, if they fit me, I’d be allllllll over the pink girly clothes you wear!

  • Panda

    says:

    you’re so right!

So cute. The dress looks great on you.
I’ve also gone through times where I feel like I should be buying more ‘mature’ clothing… especially when I’m with my parents but then I see these awesome cute clothes online and I’m like… YES I NEED THAT. Keep doin’ whatcha doin’. :]

Almost 40 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I died, I am new here and really You look like 25 in that pink dress πŸ˜€

  • Dez

    says:

The whole point of being an “adult” is that YOU get to decide what you wear & do without having to care what anyone else’s preferences are. Plus, you rock your style really well so keep being yourself and ignore the drama llamas. πŸ™‚

  • Jms

    says:

I LOVE that you are almost forty and wearing WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! You completely rock it. Btw, is that Polly pocket on the dress? Hehe makes me happy <3

  • NO WAY ARE YOU NEARLY 40!

I thought you were younger than me, and I’m 25!

cmon you are a successful entrepreneur with tons of fans, and your work is beautiful. you have the luxury to be who you are, and you are loved for it. for every idiot naysayer there are a thousand that love you. girls get hated on for being pretty, thin, successful, popular, talented, etc. etc. 100% of the time it is people with nothing going on in their lives and are jealous as hell.

  • Crafty

    says:

Hi! I absolutely 100% love your style!! I actually admire the fact that you can face judgy closedminded people the way you do and not let them rule your life…

P.S. you don't look a day past 27 and that is also inspiring!! πŸ˜€
