Gettin’ with the 21st Century: Buying a Kindle

So I used to work in publishing. When you work in publishing, the joke is that you never actually read real books because you are so busy reading manuscripts.

When I left publishing, I thought a new world of reading would open up to me, and I could fall in love with books again.

WRONG!

Working for yourself means you might have ZERO free time. (I know, I know, “make time!” but what I’m saying is, I don’t.) So the only time I really read books is when I’m getting my hair bleached and colored, but even then, if I have a pressing work deadline, I’m the nerd sitting under the hair-heater with a yarn bag, crocheting away.

One of the things my brother wanted last year for Christmas was the Kindle Fire. I was a bit inspired by this request and also decided I wanted a Kindle (albeit Fire-less). So then he gave me an Amazon gift certificate to cover part of a Kindle. Truth be told, I kind of kept forgetting to order my Kindle…..UNTIL NOW. SIX MONTHS LATER. But don’t worry. It’s ordered now. It’s done. I’m getting it. July 10!

And now comes the even MORE fun part! Shopping for a Kindle cover! On Etsy, of course.

There are cool ones made out of real books, like this:

Ooooh, The Giving Tree! Yes please!

Are you guys really reading a lot of werewolf smut?

My Neighbor Totoro in vinyl:

Oh my. “Cute Hamster” indeed!

Okay, this embroidered Kindle cover is nothing short of AMAZING. The whole shop is amazing.

This Chewbacca one makes me giggle.

Ok, I’ve skimmed through about 70 pages of Etsy listings and am a little burnt out! I might end up making my own, but due to having LOTS of projects already, I may still keep hunting around!

I got a Kindle for Christmas and I love it! My cover is very plain, purple leather, but I love that too πŸ™‚ although I still love real books and I will never stop wanting them, my Kindle is so amazing because it means I can have 2 or 3 books on the go at one time and I don’t need to carry them all with me! If you ever get time, you could crochet a cupcake cosy or a bacon pouch with a fried egg on top for your kindle!

OH yes, I definitely love real books, too! But lugging around 3 hardcovers when you’re traveling is kind of a pain. It will be nice to streamline that a little bit! πŸ˜‰

I downloaded a Kindle app into my iPad. Now when I go travelling, all I need is the iPad which replaces the laptop and a, usually heavy, book.

I considered an iPad but didn’t feel like I was ready to make that purchase yet, especially because I just had to buy a new desktop!

Let me know what you think of the Kindle Fire, I may get one for myself.

Oh! I didn’t get the Fire. I didn’t feel like I needed all the bells and whistles, so I got a more basic one. But I know Jamie wanted a Fire, so I wonder if he ended up getting one after all!

Ohh I have a kobo and LOVE it! I hardly ever read because I thought I had no time except before bed. But the convenience means I have it with me everywhere and am always finding a few minutes here and there to read a few more pages πŸ™‚

I am like ALWAYS late to everything and don’t often find myself waiting around, but I might be surprised as well!

I really love my Kindle, and I went and got digital versions of all my favorite books. My allergies are at a point now in where I can’t keep a lot of things that can gather dust real easily in the bedroom; so I’ve tried to trim down my book collection with my Kindle πŸ˜€

I’m excited to be able to read books I’m curious about but don’t necessarily need a copy of for the rest of my life… like the Hunger Games!

I downloaded Kindle for PC so I can now read ebooks on my laptop which has increased my reading a thousand fold! I went from reading a couple of books a year to, sometimes, reading nearly 30 in a month! Dude, those covers make me want a Kindle even more!

      says:

You could always cover your laptop in fur!! πŸ˜› Unless it’s like my laptop which feels like it is always burning a hole into my coffee table!

        says:

I’m worse, I use my laptop in bed so I have to try to angle the pillow it’s on so SOME air can get out. The bottom feels like LAVA!

  • The Giving Tree is one of my all time favorite books!

I haven’t really jumped on the Kindle bandwagon yet- I get the convenience of it (especially for travelers!), but I just feel like it takes away from the reading experience! How can I call something a “real page-turner” if I can’t turn any pages?! Haha πŸ™‚ Definitely let us know how you end up liking it- perhaps I’ll be a convert someday after all! Especially if it involves a Totoro case (I have that same case- albeit, the phone version- favorited on Etsy!) πŸ™‚

Oh for real! When I worked in publishing, and the first e-readers started coming out (The Rocket E-Reader), the entire industry freaked out because we thought the e-readers were going to take over the world! But they really took a while to gain any popularity.

  • Don’t you think this a good opportunity to bring out Twinkie Chan Kindle cases? I’d buy one πŸ™‚

Christmas before last I got the Kindle 3G. I love because it has a text to speech feature and it reads to me when I crochet. I saved up and got myself the Kindle Fire but was really disappointed that it doesn’t read to me unless I get audio books. On the other hand, it is nice to have the Fire when I read in bed because I don’t have to have an extra light and it also shows illustrations in color.. I enjoyed the 1st month of free Amazon Prime trial so I could watch movies on it for free. Each of them have their good features and I’m happy I have both. Internet is pretty easy on the Fire but rather difficult to use on the 3G although I can connect anywhere on the 3G but the Fire only has WiFi.

  • Love the covers! I have a kindle but since Audibles came out I haven’t touched it πŸ™‚ I listen while Im at work and at the studio and in the car and when Im falling asleep. Ive listened to over 20 books this year. I love to read but never have time and it really has been awesome! Now I can listen whenever I want b/c its on my phone and I carry my ear buds in my purse!
….I hope you do make a cover though – i know it will rock!

THAT HAMSTER!! Bahh omg. This post reminds me of how I decided I really wanted an iPad… ‘coincidentally’ right after Shana (from Shana Logic) posted ninja & koala iPad covers. Legit reason, right?
