Free Crochet Pattern: Frog Applique to Make My Sketchbook Cute

I recently got this sketchbook to use while filming some new Creativebug classes next week. I liked the pink cover and that the cover was stiff. I also liked the gold spiral, but I did not like the text that was on the cover.

I decided to crochet a patch or appliqué to cover up the text. It was hard to decide what to make! At first I was going to crochet a strawberry, then I decided to do a multi-scoop ice cream cone, then I thought I might do a crochet Burn Book… and somehow I ended up with a happy little frog.

It’s a super easy pattern. It’s basically a circle with some eyes and legs. I loved how it turned out, and I know you’ll find a lot of fun uses for this pattern, too.

Yarn: worsted weight green is Impeccable in Citron), light worsted weight pink is: Cascade 220 in 9478 Cotton Candy

Hook: my trusty H hook

Sketchbook: this is the pink sketchbook I ordered

Safety eyes: these are the safety eyes I got on Etsy, but you can use anything from google eyes, to buttons, to felt cut-outs. I snipped off the backs of the safety eyes with wire cutters and used Loctite Super Glue Gel to adhere them to the appliqué.

Pattern:

  • Make magic ring. Don’t join rnds.

  • Sc in next st, sl st in next st to join circle.
  • Don’t break off.

4 more sl sts on the circle.

(eye): sk 1, ( 6 dc), sk 1, sl st.

3 more sl sts on the circle.

(arm): ch 7, sk 1st ch from hook, sl st in remaining 6 chs.

7 more sl sts on the circle.

(leg): ch 8, sk 1st ch from hook, sl st in remaining 7 chs.

7 more sl sts on the circle.

7 more sl sts on the circle.

(arm): ch 7, sk 1st ch from hook, sl st in remaining 6 chs.

3 more sl sts on the circle.

  • Break off and weave in ends.
  • Embroider any facial features and then glue to notebook! I used a hot glue gun. I secured his legs in place but left his arms to move about and wave hello.

I love this pattern! What does it mean in round 4 when it says [(2hdc),2hdc] 40 stitches. Does that mean to do 2 hdc in one stitch and then another 2hdc in the next stitch? If that’s the case shouldn’t there be 60 stitches in the round. Sorry if it is a silly question, I just tried working the pattern and it’s not turning out right.
