A couple months ago, I felt super stoked about successfully going through the huge rigmarole of obtaining tickets to San Diego Comic Con. Manda and I decided to also go to Disneyland on the way down. I am still in the final throes of book-writing and really shouldn’t have gone anywhere except the yarn store, but….I could not say no to this trip!
A pretty rainbow on our way down to LA!
We stopped at Casa de Fruta and did all the things. There’s a short video of me swinging on a swing set, but I was having trouble getting it off of our shared iCloud folder because I don’t know how to do anything that starts with “i.”
Us on the teacups at Disneyland! I promised IggyStarpup that I would try a Dole Whip finally for the first time, but every time we looked at the line IT WAS SUPER DUPER LONG. And then by the end of the night, I was super full of other junk food and also completely forgot to check the line again. FAIL! Another fail is that rides kept breaking! So we didn’t get to go on the Indiana Jones ride or the Matterhorn :(.
I did, however, have a delicious CHURRO!!! There is kind of a story behind me having a churro. I think it might bore you, but I felt extremely triumphant.
I’m not one of those people who looks attractive with hair being blown off my face, so I decided to try covering most of it on Space Mountain. I was SO PROUD to be part of this Space Mountain car. I mean, look at our companions. They are amazing. Girl-In-The-Back: you’re my hero.
The next day, we drove to San Diego to hit up the Comic Con. Manda and I aren’t really superfans of anything, so we took it really easy and showed up late, which turns out to be ok cuz there’s no line to pick up your badge! I didn’t take a lot of photos inside, cuz, most of the photos would be of crowds and people. Manda is all about taking photos in front of stuff, but I get really shy and self-conscious about that, especially if it feels crowded!
The tiny cute man in the orange sweater is Stan Lee! We were randomly wandering around and all of a sudden people started taking photos of something, and Manda saw him!
This is a really blurry photo of Sean Astin. Manda has a good eye for spotting celebs. She also walked by Seth Rogan in a Ghostbusters outfit, and we saw the back of Elijah Woods’ head walking away from us. That was pretty much it for us as far as famous-people sightings. If we ever go again, I think we’ll actually try to research and plan better, although, this time around, I felt like we were both crazy with work beforehand and kinda just wanted to go with the flow.
Manda really liked moments where Thor would be looking at a map for directions, or some ladies from Game of Thrones (?) were buying snacks.
On Friday night after the con, we met up with my brother, Manda’s brother, Guapo, and Pickle for dinner at Juniper & Ivy. I’m really lame and said, “I’m so happy we get to see you!!!” when Richard Blais came to say hello at our table. I don’t think he cared. He just loved my brother’s Pied Piper t-shirt.
Later that evening, Guapo took us to a bar/club in which Manda learned the meaning of the word “ratchet.”
The next day, Manda and I decided to hit some outside stuff at the con. We parked my car at Guapo’s house and then we Uber-ed in with him to the convention center. There was a food truck area that was open to the public, and we made a beeline for the Hello Kitty truck, which actually still had donuts, which Candace and I had missed at Hello Kitty Con cuz they sold out.
I promised Candace that I would try to check out the Adult Swim Carnival and take pics. We also waited in line and went into the Meatwad dome to watch a short film in which Meatwad led us on a journey through time and space. I really wanted Manda to play skeeball and win me a pony, but the lines were so long for everything! There was a free-tshirt line but we saw a kabillion people waiting for it. It was temping, but, A KABILLION PEOPLE. IN THE HOT SUN. And I was carrying around a big Junko Mizuno toy from Kid Robot all day for Guapo. YOU’RE WELCOME, GUAPO.
Saturday night, we hung out with Guapo and Pickle again for dinner. After dinner, Guapo took us to Werewolf where they were having a Star Wars costume contest.
On Sunday, we had brunch/lunch with Manda’s sister and then drove home! We had one mission on the way home, and that was to stop in LA for donuts somewhere, because I follow all these donut shops on Instagram which give me the donut-hunger. Donut Friend in Eagle Rock came highly recommended and DID NOT DISAPPOINT. HOLY HECK. They also had a bathroom which was a huge plus, because I think the Mexican food we had eaten for brunch/lunch made us super thirsty and therefore peeing every hour. It took us like 10-11 hours to get home because of all our pee-stops. If we had been traveling with boys, they would have been really annoyed. Yay, girls! Okay, back to donuts.
The thing about this place is that you can build your own donuts!!! We did not do that, as my eyeballs were already falling out of my head looking at the ones they had out. My favorites were the one filled with custard, the Nutella one, and the one with fresh strawberries. I thought I was gonna go mental over the S’Morissey, but I guess I don’t like marshmallows as much as I want to. Manda also got a donut ice cream sandwich!
I like this parting shot a lot. Can’t escape them bug guts on the road! My car needs a bath big time. But I gotta finish my book first! 😛
