Book Giveaway: “Crochet Saved My Life”

A little while ago, Kathryn Vercillo of Crochet Concupiscence emailed me about her new book “Crochet Saved My Life: The Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Crochet.” I asked if she would like to offer a free copy to one of my blog readers, and she said yes!

To be perfectly honest, I haven’t had time yet to read the whole book, but I have gotten about half way. I didn’t want to wait too much longer to set up this giveaway for you!

Kathryn shares her journey of how crocheting helped her overcome life-threatening depression. In reaching out to the crochet community, she also met others who experienced the healing and therapeutic power of yarn and a hook. You will follow Kathryn’s personal story, her scientific research, and the stories of 24 other women from all walks of life. Her writing is thoughtful, never saccharine, and her book is an uplifting and educational thank-you to a craft that most people see as just a hobby.

On Amazon.com, the book is available as a paperback as well as a Kindle download. If you are an Amazon Prime member, the book is free in the lending library!

Kathryn is kindly offering one of my blog readers a free copy: a paperback version for U.S. readers, and an electronic version for non-U.S. readers.

  • Wow! I’m definitely putting this on my reading list. I’m not much of a reader but have been lately since I have been off work from a neck injury on the job. It’s been hard for a busy body like me to lay low and take it easy since May. I get to crochet every now and then with breaks because I get so sore but crochet (or knitting) eases my mind so much. It would be nice to hear a similar story!

    Thanks for posting Twinkie!

I agree that crocheting offers great mental and spiritual benefits. I am a huge advocate and encourager if learning handwork for all of it’s benefits.

  • Sarah N

    says:

Wow, this sounds really interesting. I have/had a severe mental health issue for 20 months before I started crocheting on the 1st January this year. I have been so, so much better since then, I am no longer plagued by it constantly. It is still there, but has faded into the background and I feel like me again. I didn’t change anything else aside from starting to crochet, so interesting to know that others have found this too! Will definitely be checking this book out if I don’t win. Currently I am working on two blankets 🙂

Same as all of the commenters above, crochet helps me to unwind, cheer myself up and get my mind off of stuff.
My latest project is a scarf made with the Crazy Zauberball. Beautiful colours, but very thin to work with.

    Keep up the good work!

I would love the chance to win this book as I feel a certain kinship with the author and find relief from my own battles with depression in crocheting…and recently, knitting, as well.

  • Ona

    says:

I am finishing up a pair of crochet/leather boots created in a free-form style I was introduced to in books recommended by Crochet Conspicuous. It’s my first time constructing boots, first time crocheting with leather and my first time working a project totally by free-form. This has been a healing project, as I got ill after beginning it, but I didn’t stop working on it, and we both came out better from the challenges 🙂

  • I’d really like to read this book. I’ve dealt with my own depression through crochet. It’s a very soothing exercise with the counting and repetitive movements. Crocheting really gives a person and sense of control and power over their own life with the added bonus of making beautiful things. My latest projects have been gaggles of headbands in all shapes, colors, and sizes for coworkers and family members.

  • niccupp

    says:

The last project I worked on was….facial scrubbies made from cotton yarn. Something super simple.

  • Liz

    says:

I would love a copy. I’ve been crocheting for over 5 years now. I recently went through a life-shattering crisis. My 5 year old daughter sufferend a massive asthma attack and passed away. Apart from my other kids, crocheting has been one of the only things that has helped keep me sane. I would really love to read other’s experiences. Even if I don’t win a copy, I’ll probably buy the book.

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Liz, I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. But I am glad crochet has been there for you!

  • Angela

    says:

I’ve been suffering from depression for years and it’s true! I started crocheting in April by following YouTube videos and I do feel so much better. I’m not sure whether it’s the feeling of accomplishment or the repetitive motion or whatever, but it does work.

  • Stephanie Ann

    says:

This looks like such a good read 🙂 The last crochet project I worked on was a baby set (blanket, booties, beanie, and mittens) for my sister’s friend.

  • Frances

    says:

I’m a very active person, meaning I always have to busy/ occupied to feel happy.. BUT, it it is very easy for me to “do” so much that I burn out. Knitting & crochet allow my body to sit & rest, while occupying my mind on something too. And it also satisfies my need to have something “useful” done. I have a beautiful product I can wear that I am especially proud of having made myself.

  • Jenae

    says:

I last worked on a Dallas cowboy colored blanket.

  • Sarah Taylor

  • Kelsey

    says:

I would love to win this book just to give it to my friend who also suffers from depression. She used to crochet, but I think it would help her a lot more now, and this book could too! Thanks to both you and the author for having this giveaway 🙂

  • Tracey Hussey

    says:

It’s very kind of you to give away a copy of this book. My latest project is an afghan for my son’s Christmas present. I was going to do one for each member but other patterns keep popping up and shouting to be done and now I’m running out if time. Argh! 🙂

  • Christopher

    says:

Where would I be without crochet and my shih-tzu chasing my yarn balls around or sitting at my feet as I hook away? No idea. But I believe crochet too has saved me from depression, and improved my overall health. I’m HIV+ and since I started crocheting on New Year’s of 2011 (I made it my resolution) my anxiety levels have gone down, my viral load has remained undetectable, and my tcells have shot up. Could it be the magic of making something? I would like to think so. But I always have a hook and a skein on me, and it is so delightful to be able to tune out with mu Ipod on public transport for a long ride and just get lost in a project, or on a train ride for a vacation away from the city, the calming rumble of the axles as I again lose myself in crochet. I love the looks I get from people: a guy with funky coloured hair and piercings and tats, with a lapdog and he’s doing some needlework? THAT in of itself is worth living for 🙂 Thanks for the amusement and inspiration Twinks! xxx

p.s. I hope I am in the running to win too! 🙂
