So, this happened.
Friends or enemies? Who’s to say?
So a million years ago, I sponsored a prize for Sugar Slam, and the winner got a a gift certificate to my shop. She asked for a tentacle scarf, and I was like, No probs, I’ve made one before, and it will be awesome! Best laid plans, etc etc etc, it took me forever to find time to make the scarf, and I felt super duper bad and awful and like the worst person ever. Thankfully, she was really understanding!!!
She requested less pastel/Barbie colors, more rich/realistic ones, and after looking at a million pictures of octopus tentacles on google images, I sent her this color palette of yarns to choose from. It was Purpley vs. OrangeyRed.
We went with the merino wool, which was Knit Picks Swish Worsted. I still couldn’t decide between Purple or Red for the main palette, and I sort of hemmed and hawed for a long time. I finally went with the reddish palette, as you can see!
I made a few small changes in design between this scarf and the past scarf. With this one, the winner asked that I draw up the edges a bit when sewing them together, in order to make the edges curl in a bit. I slip stitch the two sides together rather than sew, so I just did one slip stitch per each hdc row which made the scarf curl a bit. It shorted up A LOT. I kind of panicked! I loved the rippley effect that resulted, but I was scared it had become too short. Luckily, I think it still turned out very wearable and cool!
The other adjustment I made was giving each suction cup a little more dimension, rather than just being a flat circle. It was a little extra work, but really worth it I think! Oh yeah! I also made the suction cups progressively smaller and smaller toward the tip.
Would you wear a tentacle scarf? Should I put one in the shop?
