Recently, Michaels.com added online shopping to their site, which is pretty cool! But it looks like a lot of their knit and crochet patterns disappeared. I have no idea what the future of those patterns is, but you guys have been asking me to post some of the projects you are in the middle of! So here is the Slushee Cup Drawstring Bag pattern. I also now sell the finished item in my Etsy shop for those who don’t crochet.
Stay cool poolside with this crocheted Slushee Drawstring Bag! It’s just big enough for you to throw in your phone, keys, sunnies, lip balm, and a little cash, so you can keep a light load while catching some rays.
I reused a takeout soup container to reinforce the inside of my project, but you can still use your Slushee without. You can customize your cup by choosing the word or phrase that you like best with felt cut-outs and fabric paint (I used a custom patch that I designed!). You can even add a real red straw accent!
Materials List
- Crochet Hook, size I/5.5mm, or whatever size needed to obtain gauge
- Loops & Threads™ Impeccable Brights™ in Popsicle Blue – 1 ball
- Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™ in Cherry and Aqua – 1 ball each
- Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™ in White – 5 yards
- scissors
- tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- felt, Fabri-Tac fabric glue, and fabric paint or embroidery thread to create the words “COOL,” or you can purchase my patch!
- optional: reused 1-quart plastic takeout soup container (like this one (aff. link)), red drinking straw
Gauge
Loops & Threads™ Impeccable™: 14 sc x 16 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches
Abbreviations
BLO = back loops only
ch(s) = chain(s)
hdc = half double crochet
rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet
sk = skip
sl st = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
[ ] = repeat what is inside the brackets the number of times indicated
Special Stitches
Sc2tog : “single crochet 2 together.” Insert hook into next st, YO, pull through 1 loop. Insert hook into next st, YO, pull through 1 loop. YO and pull through all 3 loops.
Notes
– When changing to a new color of yarn, work the last stitch in the old color until the last pull-through, then pull through with the new color.
– If your yarns become too twisted while alternating two colors, pull your hook out of the project and spin the project around to untwist the yarns. Re-insert your hook and continue.
Striped Cup
-You’ll be starting with the bottom of the cup.
-With Popsicle Blue, make magic ring, or ch 3 and sl st to 1st ch to form ring.
-At the end of each rnd, sl st to 1st st of rnd to join.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (doesn’t count as 1st stitch of round), 10 hdc into ring. (10)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st. (20)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st] 10 times. (30)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts] 10 times. (40)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, 1 hdc in each st. (40)
– Now you will begin to create the stripes of your cup.
– Ch 2 does not count as 1st stitch.
– When you drop the color you are not working with, you should carry it along.
– In order to make the stripes line up as straight as possible, start each round with ch 2 then place your first stitch in the next stitch — meaning, work your 1st hdc in the 2nd hdc of the previous row. Your stripes will still lean and swirl a little bit, but to a lesser degree. (Photo 1)
Rnd 6-8: Ch 2, 4 hdc evenly. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 4 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 4 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 4 hdc.] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (40)
Rnd 9: Ch 2, 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 4 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 3 sts. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 4 hdc.] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (45)
Rnds 10-12: Ch 2, 5 hdc evenly. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 4 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 5 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 4 hdc.] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (45)
Rnd 13: Ch 2, 5 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 3 sts. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 5 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 3 sts.] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (50)
Rnd 14-16: Ch 2, 5 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 5 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 5 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 5 hdc] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (50)
Rnd 17: Ch 2, 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 5 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 4 sts. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 5 hdc.] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (55)
Rnd 18-19: Ch 2, 6 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, join Cherry. 5 hdc. [Drop Cherry, pick up Popsicle Blue. 6 hdc. Drop Popsicle Blue, pick up Cherry. 5 hdc] 4 times. With Popsicle Blue sl st to 1st hdc to join. (55) Break off Popsicle Blue and Cherry. Weave in ends.
Blue Slushee
– With Aqua, ch 25.
– This piece will first look like a parallelogram or a rectangle with angled sides. When instructed, working in the back loops only (BLO) creates the ridges and texture.
Row 1: Sk 1st ch. Then 2 sc in next ch. 21 sc evenly. Sc2tog in last 2 chs. (24)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog through both loops. 21 sc evenly in BLO. 2 sc in last st through both loops. (24)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. 2 sc in 1st st. 21 sc evenly in BLO. Sc2tog through both loops. (24)
Rows 4: Repeat Row 2. (24)
– Throughout this piece, you will create 10 holes towards one end, alternating every 5th or 6th row. You’ll use these holes later to weave a drawstring through your purse.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. 2 sc in 1st st. 1 sc in both loops (will make the hole stronger). Ch 2 and sk 2 sc. 1 sc in both loops. 17 sc evenly in BLO. Sc2tog through both loops. (24)
Rows 6-10: Alternate Rows 2 & 3, ending with Row 2. (24)
Row 11: Repeat Row 5 to create a hole. (24)
Rows 12-15: Alternate Rows 2 & 3, ending with Row 3. (24)
Row 16: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog through both loops. 17 sc evenly in BLO. 1 sc in both loops. Ch 2 and sk 2 sc. 1 sc in both loops. 2 sc in last st through both loops. (24)
Rows 17-21: Alternate Rows 3 & 2, ending with Row 3. (24)
Row 22: Repeat Row 16. (24)
Rows 23-26: Alternate Rows 3 & 2, ending with Row 2. (24)
Rows 27-48: Repeat Rows 5-26. (24)
Row 49: Repeat Row 5. (24)
Rows 50-54: Alternate Rows 2 & 3, ending with Row 2. (24)
Row 55: Repeat Row 5. (24)
-To form a tube, sl st or whipstitch Row 55 to Row 1. Break off and weave in ends. (Photo 2)
Drawstring
With Aqua, ch until your drawstring is approximately 22 inches long. Break off and weave in ends.
Assembly
1. You will attach Striped Cup to Blue Slushee by crocheting through both pieces with White, which also creates a white lip for the cup. You might want to start crocheting at the seam of both pieces, so that these seams line up and fall on the same side. Begin with Blue Slushee, holes facing down, and insert hook into a free stitch along the top edge of the tube. Then, with Striped Cup upside down, also insert hook into a free stitch at the mouth of the Cup. Now, join White and begin to sc through both pieces all the way around. For each stitch on Striped Cup, there will be 1 Row of Blue Slushee (both will equal 55). After working 55 sc to connect the pieces, sl st to 1st sc to join. Break off and weave in ends. (Photo 3)
2. Starting from the outside going in, weave Drawstring in and out of the holes at the top of Blue Slushee. Both ends should end up on the outside. Tie a knot to secure. (Photo 4)
3. Cut letters out of felt. I drew my letters freehand with a disappearing ink fabric marker, but you can also print out letters on regular paper and cut them out to use as stencils for your felt. Each letter should be about the same width as a colored stripe. My cup says “COOL,” but maybe your cup will say “CHILL OUT,” “SWEET,” or “ICE QUEEN!”
4. Outline each letter with black embroidery thread or black fabric paint. Add “frozen drip” details, if you wish.
5. If you have a plastic cup for the inside, insert it now before gluing the letters on to accommodate any stretching. Attach letters with Fabri-Tac™ and allow time to dry.
6. If you want to stick a straw into the Blue Slushee, pinch one end of the straw to fit it through your stitches. You’ll be cutting this off, so it’s ok if it looks ugly! I left about 3 inches of straw on the outside of my bag and trimmed the end on the inside of the bag to about ¼ inch. I then applied a line of glue around the bits where the outside of the straw touched the crochet fabric.

I don’t know which I love more, your sense of whimsy or your willingness to share a pattern that you have every right to keep to yourself. Thanks so much for sharing this pattern! I love everything you do!
You keep topping yourself in cleverness! I looooooove your ideas and your fun-fun-fun attitude. I can’t wait to see what colorful delicious patterns you’ll come up with in the future! 🙂

Aw you’re welcome!!! Have so much fun with it!
I absolutely love this Icee cup purse pattern!! Thank you very much! 🙂 🙂
would it be possible for me to sell these since it does say not to sell the made products without permission. So! I am asking for permission to sell not the instructions but the finished product in different ways! 🙂 Thanks! Please email me your answer I would be happy to get a reply! 😀
I love all your patterns! But I need some serious help with the Slushee Cup:/ I’ve learned how to read patterns now but I am a bit confused on the cup part and the slushee itself. I have no idea how to attach the seperate colors together when making the cup and the slushee part seems to be getting smaller, not bigger. LOL Please help me! Could you do a video about it or just write back? Either way would be tramendous help! Thanks so much:)
It may take me a while to get up a video tutorial for that, because I have other projects I need to shoot first! Have you joined my group on Ravelry? I set it up so everyone could help each other with my patterns. It would also be helpful to see a photo of what the problem is, especially with the slushee part.

That’s okay:) and no I have not but I definitely will! And I will try and send you a picture within the next day or so, is that okay?
Aloha from Hawaii Twinkie Chan…I have admired all your crocheting and I have made some for kids in preschool…I made some kleenex boxes for members of my church as gifts…I had so much complements on your styles you’ve made…I really wish you would have videos of your works…I sometimes get confuse, but I made it through…thank you so much for some of your free patterns…I really appreciate it so much so does the members of the church and the preschool children. Mahalo
Hi! I’ve started to make some video tutorials on YouTube, in case you haven’t seen them yet :). Thank you for your sweet note!
Hello. I am a disabled crocheter with a terminal medical condition. I am seeking permission to make and sell your bags at the Go Fourth festival in Longview, WA on July 2-4, 2015. I have no online presence, and the permission I seek is for local sales at this festival only, which will help offset medical expenses. I appreciate your reply. Thank you.
Thank you so much for getting in touch! Yes, please, go ahead, and good luck with your festival!
love the pattern!! Thanks for sharing, wondering if I could sell them?
Again thank you!!
Brenda
I’ll email you!
Thank you for sharing your pattern. May I sell the finished product with credit to you for the pattern? Thanks in advance.
Hello! Thank you so much for this pattern! It’s super cute. Such a great idea! I was wondering if I could have permission to sell these at a trade days in November. Just the finished product, and I will not be putting the letters on it, I’m not great at that stuff anyways lol. I’d really appreciate it. Thank you! 🙂
I’m usually fine with that as long as people keep the quantity to less than 10 at any certain event! 🙂 Thank you for asking!
Thank you so much! 10 is more than enough 🙂
Thanks for the pattern! You are truly blessed with talent. Going to make these for the grandkids to play with in their “kitchen” at Grandma’s. Won’t they be surprised when they open up the refrigerator and see them! Just thought I’d share what I plan to do with them. Thanks again for sharing something so creative
Thank you so much for the sweet note. I hope they have a lot of fun!!!
These are incredible! Thank you for posting the pattern. Is there a print-friendly version?
Hi! Unfortunately, I don’t usually have time to format my free patterns for print-friendliness!
This is the first time ever commenting on a pattern but I had to compliment you on the clarity of your instructions and the beautiful colorful accompanying photos. It all makes for a very successful project. And these Slushee bags couldn’t be any cuter.
Thanks.
Thank you so much for the nice feedback! I really appreciate it!
Thank you for the patterns. They are so cute. I have a medical condition that right now is keeping me from crocheting, but hopefully can start crocheting again. If I am able to start crocheting, would it be possible for me to make a couple and sell them? Let me know. Thank you.
This is so amazing! You are truly an artist!!! I wanted to know if I could sell what I make from this pattern-I don’t sell a lot on my store, just enough to feed my kids. I would give you credit for the pattern. I also sent you an email through your contact form on this website.
Thank you so much for at least answering!
Erin
These have got to be the cutest things EVER!!! Thank you for sharing the pattern, I am almost done with the cup!! Just started this morning, just like a good book, I cant put it down 🙂 I was also wondering if I could see if I can sell my finished product at a craft sale I am doing in September, of course I would give you credit.
Thank you again, and I cant wait to try more of your patterns!!!
Linda
Love this pattern! Thanks for sharing. I am doing some small local sales and was wondering if I may sell the finished products please and thank you?
Hi! Thanks for asking. Absolutely! If you could include that the pattern designer is Twinkie Chan somewhere on your packaging or signage, I would really appreciate it.
Love this pattern. My son loves slurpees so he wants one.. wondering about selling them? I’ve had a few family and friends as for them but wanted to know if selling them is ok. No online sales or anything just word of mouth locally. I’d this ok?
That’s totally fine! Thanks for asking! 🙂
So loving this can’t wait to try it….stupid question….these are US crochet terms, correct? I ran into an issue once when I unknowingly used UK terms and it came out all wonky!
Thanks!
US crochet terms! I always forget to say that!
Hi. I just made one of these and people I know are asking about them. Everyone loves it, it’s such a fun and great pattern. Is it okay if I sell the ones I make?
Hi, yes it’s fine, and a credit to me as the designer would be really appreciated. Thank you!
really love these bags ,really wanting to try if I do make some do I have permission to sell a few. thanks again and love your creations.
Hi, yes it’s fine, and a credit to me as the designer would be really appreciated. Thank you!
How can we purchase a cool patch from you?
They are in my etsy shop: http://twinkiechan.etsy.com 🙂
These are adorable! I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to increase the size of the pattern to fit a larger container (I was thinking about the size of an Edy’s 48oz ice cream container).
On a basic level…. more rnds and more increasing. But I’d have to sit down and work out the specifics just like anyone else. Good luck!
I adore this project and can’t wait to try it. I’ve actually just bought your book and am probably going to do just about everything in there, just need to get my yarn stash down, it’s truly nutso. But I was wondering what yarns did you use for the pink slushee? I’m assuming the blue stripes is the popsicle blue, but the pinks? they are magical pinks. Thanks in advance. Love love love your stuff.
The yarn I use now is all Red Heart Super Saver 🙂
Hi 🙂 These are SO adorable!! Do you sell your patches?
Yes, I do in my Etsy shop, but I’m currently out of the COOL patches. More on the way!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! I have had a few requests for some to be made for sale. Would I have your permission to sell a few of these? Thanks again!!
Hi, sure! If you could credit me as the designer on your online listings or hangtags, that would be super amazing 🙂
I’ve made a few of these bags and have had people ask me to make them. Would you mind if I sold a few?
Hi! Thanks for asking! Yes, that’s fine :).
Thank you for sharing your awesome pattern! You Rock! It was so much fun to make & turned out fantastic! Woo hoo! I can’t wait to make another one. 🙂 Thanks again!
Yay! I’m so glad!!
Does there have to be something inside the bag? If so, what else could I use?
Thanks
Crochet is soft and squishy, so it really does require something inside of it to maintain a good structure. I am not really sure what else to put in there. I buy my takeout containers on Amazon so that I’m not using actually-used takeout containers for my customers.
Ok thank you.
Hi Twinkie! As soon as I saw this, I said, “I have to make this!” I love every one of your patterns, and I think this is my favorite! I know a lot of other people who would want them, so do you mind if I sold a few? I hope so! One more question, Do you think you could create a pattern for crocheting Eleven from Stranger Things? I have tryed to find pattern for this, but there is none out there, so I thought you might be able to create one. Again, I adore all of your work, and I hope to get a reply from you soon!!! Thank you!!!
-El <3 Eggos
Could you please give colors of yarn for the pink slushy and cup. My granddaughter is going to love this. It’s so hard for us “oldies” who crochet to find something that the younger ones will like. Thanks for a real winner. Blessings.
I believe the colors are Pretty n Pink, Petal Pink, and Turqua – all Red Heart Super Saver.
Hi this is super cute! I was wondering what size it ends up being and what size cup you put inside. thanks!
It’s the size of a quart/32oz soup container like this: http://amzn.to/2w4i4OR
Thank you for this awesome pattern!!!!
You’re so welcome!
This is so cool! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for visiting!
I love these! I am already making a second one and thinking about other slushee colors! Thank you so much for your creativity!
I’m so happy you are enjoying the pattern!
Thanks for sharing this pattern! I am wondering if I could sell items I make using this pattern? Giving credit to you of course.
Hi! Thank you for asking. Yes you may sell items with a credit to me as a designer. Good luck!
I love all your patterns and think these cups are awesome. Would it be possible for me to make some for selling if I give credit to you as designer? And also is there a limit of how many I could make for any events / fayres I attend later in the year? Thank you so much for your fab patterns, and for sharing them with us
Hi! Thank you for asking! You can absolutely sell them, and I would so appreciate a credit as the designer. I’ve never really put a limit on quantity. It’s more like, if you go into mass-production and start churning out a line, it would seem fair to have a more specific discussion. Thanks again! I hope your events are great!
Do you actually attach the cup to inside somehow? Or just put it in and make sure its sung? Thanks for any reply.
You can just put the cup inside. It’s slippery so it can start to slowly pull away. It’s been difficult for me to find a blue that will adhere to the plastic cup!
