FreeFor24Hrs Crochet Pattern: Hot Dog Scarf

/ | 27 Comments on FreeFor24Hrs Crochet Pattern: Hot Dog Scarf

I’m often kinda torn between posting all my patterns for free or putting them up on Etsy. And then if I distinguish between which patterns I put where….. I think some lines start to get blurry. While I love sharing inspiration and projects, I feel like my time and ideas are valuable, too, and while I have wonderful blog sponsors, it’s not like I make that much money from my blog nor do I post content often enough to make that logical. Pattern-selling in general is probably not going to ever be a living wage for me, but I do think that there is worth to our designs. I’m also not at the point yet where I want random advertising popping all over my blog. So, yes, this is a long rant. Sorry about that! I tend to over-share, but I’m still just trying to figure everything out, to get you guys the patterns you like, and to also make sure it is worth my time and energy and that I can pay for my wifi etc etc! 😛 For now, for scarf patterns in particular, I like the “FreeFor24Hrs” format. It’s like a “thank you” to the people who follow my blog and social media. This is a fairly easy pattern, and sometimes I like putting the easy patterns up for free, but since it’s also a scarf, I do like the idea of keeping all my signature scarves on Etsy. Again, I’m still playing with all of this. tl;dr   Edit: FreeFor24Hrs is now over! Thanks so much, everyone! Find the pattern now in my Etsy shop. It was originally commissioned by Homespun Magazine last Fall, so if you were not able to get the magazine, now you can get the pattern!

Free Crochet Pattern & Video: Easy Chain Link Scarf!

/ | 10 Comments on Free Crochet Pattern & Video: Easy Chain Link Scarf!

OKAY, I know it’s only like the day before Mother’s Day, but I posted a YouTube video for a Mother’s Day project anyway. You know how it goes with me … I’m a terrible planner when it comes to videos and holidays, and you can always use a bunch of older projects for this year’s present, and then you can use this one for future presents! 😛 I need to shoot better photos of the scarf and of me wearing it! But anyway, as I explain in the video, I have a store-bought scarf that I wear all the time and that is getting kind of old-looking, so I wanted to make myself a new one. I figured, you might want to make one, too. There are a lot of patterns and tutorials out there for chain link scarves already, so this isn’t a new-new idea, and I don’t even know if there is some cool tip or trick I’m missing out on. It’s just something I made for myself in real life. If anything, it’s just inspiration to start digging around in your stash and putting together yarns you might not have normally put together! In my scarf, I have some Madeline Tosh, Lion Brand, Knit Collage, and handspun from Etsy. The other fun thing (for me) about the video is that I lit my hands with my new OttLite (that you can win, too!). You’ll notice that the light changes throughout the tutorial portion of the video, because I kept changing the light settings around. I like whatever setting I had it on for the very last tutorial shot! I think that was the cool temp at full blast. Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful weekend, whatever it is that you’re doing! <3

Gang! I will be in Pasadena May 14-15 to teach some crochet classes at Vogue Knitting Live! VKL is a 3-day yarn/knitting/crocheting extravaganza which features: • More than 150 classes • shopping in the Marketplace with more than 70 vendors selling hard-to-find fibers, accessories, and patterns • knit-couture fashion shows • a cocktail reception with singer/songwriter Siedah Garrett, who will entertain attendees with a rendition of “Man in the Mirror” • a health area where you can get hand and back massages, make and take stress-relieving hearts and lemons, and share why you love knitting & crocheting • and so much more! I’m teaching two projects from my book, a mini donut fridge magnet and a can-o-soup fridge magnet! They are tiny and adorable, and if you’re a beginner, you’ll learn some neat skills! I wish I could link directly to each class, but I can’t seem to figure that out… : X. Here’s the class list. I’m teaching Saturday from 2:00-4:00pm (soup can) and also Sunday from 2:00-4:00pm (donut). Look out for the DONUT and the SOUP CAN! I’m also hanging out in the health area from 11:30-1:30 on Saturday and Sunday. I’ll be heading the make-and-take for some lemon and heart-shaped stress balls! I would love to see you there! Don’t leave me hangin’! And here’s the amazingly awesome fun part!!! Vogue Knitting Live is letting me give one of my classes in Pasadena away FOR FREE! (I want to be clear that you would be entering to win an in-person, 2-hour class at the convention, so you should plan or already be planning to be in Southern California in May.) Starting from this very second right now until Friday at noon PDT, enter to win a free crochet class with me! Simply leave a comment here on my blog, telling me about your favorite thing to crochet, or something you’re looking forward to learning how to crochet! I’ll choose a winner randomly via Random.org. Good luck!

Free Crochet Pattern: Christmas Pickle Ornament!

/ | 14 Comments on Free Crochet Pattern: Christmas Pickle Ornament!

In the spirit of Christmas Eve, I’m posting my crochet pattern for my Christmas Pickles! I really wanted to do a YouTube video for these, but I just don’t have time to do it before Christmas. Like, I could shoot it and everything, but the editing process takes forever! If you guys still want a video after the holidays, I’ll add one! There are a few different versions of the significance of the Christmas Pickle. Feel free to Wiki it. It appears people think the tradition came from Germany, but it really might be a mid-Western thing. The first child who finds the pickle in the tree on Christmas morning gets an extra present. OR, the first person to unpack the pickle while decorating the tree gets an extra present. OR, while we were in Seattle, someone told one more possibility, which I don’t remember. Pretty much: make up whatever you want, and create your own traditions! I’m not a super-fast crocheter (I don’t like to feel like I’m in a rush … I like to enjoy the process!) and I can finish a pickle in 30-45 minutes.  I like using this sparkly green worsted weight yarn, but you can use whatever green yarn you like. The pickle is basically just a log with a curve in it. We create this curve by putting shorter stitches in one section of the pickle. The bumps are created by randomly swapping out a single crochet with a triple crochet. It’s really easy! I think they look funny with eyes, but that is also entirely up to you. Let’s get started!
