On Monday, I was the Featured Entrepreneur at Launch.Grow.Joy , a cool website for entrepreneurs who want to read other business-owners’ stories and learn neat tips about how to improve your product-based business. Honestly, at first I thought the site was going to be stuffy and business-y and not for me, but I really like the site and already learned a thing or two! Please do check it out!

New Interview with me at The Making Spot blog!

Happy Monday! It’s Crochet Month over at U.K. crafty blog The Making Spot who kindly asked me to offer some stories and inspiration. I try to think of new and different anecdotes for you guys in various interviews, so check out The Making Spot to find out what an Onion Head is ๐Ÿ˜› P.S. to complete your visual while reading, Boxburg was made out of a bunch of recycled refrigerator boxes that all the kids painted and decorated by themselves. I believe mine was sky blue with painted grass on the bottom and a white fence! I don’t remember what all the boxes/businesses looked like, but I do remember that one of the most popular ones was a video arcade, where one boy brought in some sort of video game system (this was the 80s) and all the boys huddled in this tiny box! I also remember my friend Jeanette’s business, which was a beauty salon. She painted my nails and we gossiped! It was super fun but was also meant to be educational, as we also learned about capital, taxes, gross profit, net profit. Pretty cool, right? Wish I had a picture!

Sorry for the radio silence!

| 8 Comments on Sorry for the radio silence!

Sometimes blogging can feel overwhelming, so I take a break from it, and then feel guilty about it for some reason! AH! Anyway, I have finished shipping out all your Halloween goodies, and soon, we will be on to Thanksgiving….and Christmas! Wheee!!! In the meantime, I am working on a new crochet painting for Locketship‘s anniversary party, art show, and launch party for their new collection Galactic Glitter. The theme is SPACE! Here is a sneak animated gif of what I’m crocheting up! I wish the real thing could also wiggle and blink, but….yarn can only do so much!   p.s. you can still buy MUMMY MITTS which I discounted, and peeps in the continental U.S. can still get them by Halloween, but probably only if you order today and tomorrow :).

JapanLA’s “Kittens & Ice Cream” 5th Anniversary Art Show & Party!

| 28 Comments on JapanLA’s “Kittens & Ice Cream” 5th Anniversary Art Show & Party!

I am super excited to attend JapanLA‘s 5th Anniversary party and art show! I’m also super excited to be part of it! Normally, I would’ve made limited edition accessories, but I wanted to try something more along the lines of a “painting” with crochet. Whatever you would call this, I had fun with it!!! I titled it “Sweet ride, bro!” I asked Hairy if I would regret it later, and he said no …. In case someone asks “WTF is this?!” it’s 3 ice cream scoop-kitty cats sitting in a banana boat, rowing across on an ocean of hot fudge with their pink plastic spoon oars.     So if you are in LA this weekend, June 4, come and see it — and a bunch of other cool art — in person! Part of the proceeds from the art sales will go to “Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue & Support.”

New Feature in Alternative Revolt Magazine

| 5 Comments on New Feature in Alternative Revolt Magazine

Leondra from Alternative Revolt magazine interviewed me for this special feature in their anniversary issue. I was kinda surprised they contacted me, since it’s mostly a tough-looking music mag, but I was happy cuz Leondra gets it. My line looks really cutesy-poo and young, but my pieces are really for older girls with an appreciation for all things girlie! My interview is on pages 22-23, and the issue is free to check out online!

Twinkie Chan Crochet Cupcake Party in London!

| 23 Comments on Twinkie Chan Crochet Cupcake Party in London!

Hairy and I are back from visiting London and Ireland. I have quite a few photos but thought I would start with my book signing/crochet cupcake party at All The Fun of the Fair off Carnaby Street. (Click the link to see the shop’s blog entry about the event with LOTS of photos!) Pretty much all the photos I’m posting are stolen from All The Fun of the Fair, and lovely ladies Boopetta, Little Miss Delicious, Tet’s post in my Ravelry group, Cakemix, and Cat from Cut Out & Keep! A few days before the event, we were in the ‘hood and decided to scope out the adorable venue, but the shop was closed! On the day of, we bought 2 dozen cupcakes at Candy Cakes. It took a little while because I didn’t realize that buying 2 dozen cupcakes was a to-do there, and it was a bit of a mess but worked out ok! Then we ran upstairs to the shop, only to realize that Zoe from the shop had also baked a bunch of cuppies at home!!! Cupcake overload! Here’s a snap that Hairy took before he went to find some manly stuff to do. And here are the rest of the photos that I done stole: It was really cool meeting new friends and some of my girls from my my Ravelry group, and also my cousin, and two reps from my book publisher came out to support! I also got to meet some of my cute Twitter buds like Teese and Little Miss Delicious. All in all it was a joy to hang out with everybody and maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity to have us all in the same room. Too bad we can’t do that every week! Frankly, I was a bit nervous and anxious about it beforehand because I’m pretty much an introvert who spends all day alone working with the dogs, but the event was super duper fun, and I appreciate everybody who came :). Oh yeah! I forgot to mention that there was a giant 500,000 people protest against the government that day, too. Hairy and I experienced a bit of it on the way back to our hotel from the book event. Loads of people in the streets. Tube stations closed. Traffic everywhere. TopShop got hit with giant paint splatters. I hope everyone made it home without too much ado!!

New Toffee Mag is out! Twinkie Chan pattern inside!

| 17 Comments on New Toffee Mag is out! Twinkie Chan pattern inside!

When I heard about Toffee Mag at KitschyDigitals(whose house I want to raid) a few months ago, I totally fell in <3 with it! It’s beautifully laid out and also comes with a “chewy center,” i.e. downloadable printable papers and fun craft projects. When Toffee put out the call for contributors, I raised my hand! So please go check out Toffee. There is a fun surprise in there from me to you! Let’s just say it has to do with the forest, as well as your favorite hot beverage :). EDIT: ok I broke. How could I not post any pics here? I’m too excited! We’re here to fox you up!   Time to sniff each other’s butts! We had that funny forest/sky background already since it was one of Hairy’s art pieces, and one of my craft tables is covered in astro turf, so it all kinda worked out perfectly. Another cool thing about the pattern in Toffee is that I’m pretty sure you could modify my fingerless mitt pattern (in my book) and make some cute fox gloves! ๐Ÿ™‚ I was actually planning to do this, but never made the time. I think they would be adorable (I’d probably leave out the tail, though!). Oh yeah, wanna see some “sketches” of forest friends before I decided on the fox? Hello, humans! Ugh, p.s. what is the DEAL, wordpress? When I host photos on WordPress rather than Flickr or Photobucket, and I try to center align everything, the photos NEVER center align! *FIST SHAKE*

Twinkie Chan on TV!

| 51 Comments on Twinkie Chan on TV!

On Xmas Eve, my local NBC News station aired a little segment about me and my work! It was pretty cool to watch it with my parents and my bestie! Manda took a video on her iPhone of all of us watching it for the first time. I hope she posts that so I can show you. You get to hear me shout about stuff like how crooked my teeth are on a giant flat screen HDTV! I was really excited to be contacted by a local producer, who at first just asked if I had scarves to sell her! Next thing I knew, I was furiously hanging prints in my house and trying to make the place look okay for her and the camera man/interviewer to film me in my environment! They were here for about 2 hours, and Manda helped dog-sit! This is pretty much the first time someone else has filmed me talking and is the first time I’ve seen myself on TV. I have avoided being on TV before because I was too scared…I coulda been on DIY Network a few years back! Yes, I’m a total girl and totally mortified and completely focusing on all my physical flaws and all the weird ways I say things when a camera is pointed at me! But it’s still pretty cool, so I’ll share it with you guys! ๐Ÿ˜›

They charge you for extra luggage now! Here are some photos from a few of my past events. We haven’t gotten video of anything yet. We’ll try in Seattle! Here’s me and Brianna at the Urban Craft Center in Santa Monica. She brought me a drawing. Isn’t she the bestest!!?? I look like I have the demon eye in this picture. So here’s the version where Brianna has the demon eye. As it turns out, she had better pictures on her blog! This was an interesting signing. There was some mix-up with the time, and people had just been waiting around waiting for me to arrive. Then, the audio/video presentation was sort of choppy because their projector kept overheating and they tried to cool it down with a sack of frozen fruit. I felt a bit out of my element, since my talk had been based on my power point presentation, but everything worked out. Everyone asked LOTS and lots of questions, and all was good! Here’s my very first crochet class! We’re at my favorite local yarn shop, ImagiKnit! I have been shopping here for years, so it was very awesome to me personally to end up signing books here. People, I do not know how to teach, especially crochet!! I had no idea what I was doing, and we had people there of all skill levels, so I kinda didn’t know what to do with myself. Luckily, Katelyn (sp??) from the shop was there to help out! Here’s a pic of me and Anna, who provided the ImagiKnit picture! Finally, here is a pic of the audience at my signing at Stories in Echo Park/L.A. I think we are all watching the video! I had taken a short video clip from the front of […]
