Screen shot 2014-02-14 at 4.46.40 AMOh hey! You can pick up my face and a free pattern at your local Michaels store! Lily Sugar ‘n Cream is coming out with some new, yummy, candy colors and asked me to whip up some fun crochet treats for their Sweets & Delights promo! I created two crochet projects for them, and the first one is this Cupcake Dish Cloth! I’ll post the second project here tomorrow! ;). The pattern is also available on Michaels.com (thank you, Elleen!).

(By sandwiching the Stem/Loop between the Frosting and the Cherry, I hoped to give the hanging loop more strength than just dangling it at the very top of either piece. Also, by leaving the Stem/Loop separate from the Cherry, you can crochet a green cherry stem if you wish!)

This cute design is what pushed me into crochet! I saw the pattern hanging from a rack in a Michaels and it was just too adorable not to attempt making.

Maybe this is a dumb beginner question, but I’m wondering if there’s a specific way to do the frosting’s edging. I know it’s 28 sc, but am I supposed to spot specific stitches to go through? Or I just go with the flow and put them anywhere as long as it looks kinda even and that I end up with 28 sc?

Thanks! I loooove everything you do and I already can’t wait to try your other patterns. I’ll definitely buy your book.

I picked the pattern up at Michael’s because of how cute it is! I just finished it, but it did have trouble with the cake part. I’m hoping when you do the video it will help me out. I’m going to try another one to see if I improve. Thanks for the cute pattern.

If I wanted to use this as a potholder, would you recommend I make 2 and sew them together or would just the one be ok?

    • TwinkieChan

I think you would need to sew 2 together, but I’ve not actually tried these out as potholders before!

    Hi
I am working on this pattern and I am having a little bit of problem. I got the frosting part done and I am having trouble with the cake part.
1st row: work 1 sc in each unworked loop across. Which loop are you talking???
3rd and alt rows. What that mean exactly. Because there is no instruction for rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15. Which row should we work

    Thank you for your help

    Thank you so much.

    i

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Question 1: Your last frosting row was worked in back loops only, so you work the first Cake row in the front loops that remain. I have a video up on Youtube which may help: http://youtu.be/rd4sEDZVSpo

Question 2: The instruction for 3rd and alt rows is to work sc/single crochet evenly across. So every odd or alt row is just working single crochet evenly across.

Thanks for this post. I was wondering the same thing.

I love your cupcake pattern, just saw your video….very well done!!!
Could you come to our local MICHAEL ‘S and do a DEMO????

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Where are you located? I’m not sure if Michaels has guests come to do demos or if they fly anyone in.

  • Sarah

    says:

Your leaflet in Michaels totally inspired me to take up crocheting. And this video made it possible. I’ve also taken your advice and learned to read patterns. I went to a yarn shop and got a stitch how-to. The cloth turned out so well. And to think that a month ago, I’d never crocheted! Thank you so much for being an inspiration, and an excellent teacher.

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Sarah!! Thank you so much for your feedback. You truly made my day!! I’m so excited that you started crocheting, and I’m really impressed that you were able to tackle the cupcake dish cloth as a beginner. You are going to have so much fun crocheting future projects! YAY!!!!

  • Korinda

    says:

I love this pattern it’s so cute. If I wanted to make one a little bit smaller for classroom decorations how would I go about doing that?

  • Ruth

    says:

Hi i seen this pattern at Michaels awhile ago put they didn’t have any free patterns left so I didn’t get a chance to make one. Put then I found your video on how to make it. I really enjoyed making it it was so much fun. I wish you would come out with a book with all those cake tissue boxes I’m sure other people would enjoy that too. Put what I was wondering is how would you suggest to make it into a towel topper. I’m asking because I just found some really cute cupcake towels. And do you have your book out in book stores?

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

HI! Did you see my http://www.TissueBoxBakery website? It has a couple of the tissue box patterns on it :).

I am not sure if there is a quick fix to turn it into a towel-topper. I’m sorry!!! I have a feeling there may be some patterns already out there for that. Try Ravelry.com!

My book came out in 2010, so it was in a lot of major stores back then. But it’s been a few years now, plus, it’s basically sold out, so it will be hard to find in stores or online.

  • Monica Mikes

    says:

Thank you so much for posting this pattern and the video on youtube. I finished my cupcake dish cloth today. I’m so proud of myself and learn lots of new techniques thanks to you!

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

YAY!! I’m so glad you had fun with the pattern!

  • Gloria Hernandez

    says:

Hello, I just saw your video for the cupcake dishcloth I’m trying to read patterns and for the frosting I nailed it. When I came across the part for the fphtr and the fptr it doesn’t say to skip behind the fphtr or fptr WHY? and what does alt mean in crochet instructions it also doesn’t say to work on rows 5 7 9 11 13 15 thank you loved the visual for the dishcloth video but I would loved to know WHY there were missing instructions thank you

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

The pattern was edited in-house by someone at Michaels or the CYC, and I’m sure they have their own methods for editing/writing patterns. You are instructed to skip the stitch behind the FP stitches in the abbreviations section, and also for the odd-numbered rows, the pattern says. “3rd and alt rows, Ch 1, 1 sc in each st to end of row. Turn.” So all the “alt” rows refer to the rows you felt were missing. So ultimately nothing is missing in the pattern, it just might be written a way that is unfamiliar? Thanks so much!

  • Megan Cook

    says:

AHH!! HELP! I just cannot get the frosting rightnon this pattern. Mine always comes out curved not straight across at the bottm like yours is. I can’t even move on to the cake part. I’ve watched your video and followed along several times as well as following the pattern. Please help i don’t know what im doing wrong.

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Hmmmmm it’s hard for me to offer help without any kind of visual?

  • Elaine

    says:

Could you give us a link to the pattern on the Michaels website. I can’t find it 🙁
    I love your bright designs!!

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Hi! Since Michaels revamped their website to incorporate e-commerce, they completely wiped their pattern section and started over, so I think right now, my blog is the place to find this pattern :).

      • Elaine

        says:

Thank you so much for replying to my question. I have Pinned the cupcake dishcloth pattern. 🙂

  • Magan

    says:

I love this pattern! I use the video every time I make this cute little cupcake! It’s a fantastic gift 🙂
The sad part is that all I can find are the regular colors of Sugar’n Cream. In store and online. The link that you have posted to by from michaels doesn’t work. When I click on it, it says: page not found (on the michaels website)

How do we find these beautiful bright colors that you are using?

    Thanks so much!

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

The colors I’m using in the video are ones that I can usually find at Michaels. The pattern was written for a special promo of springtime pastel colors, which were never even available online and only at some stores (not the ones close to me!). Sorry about that!

  • Yvette

    says:

Just completed a trial run of this cute cupcake. I had a few colors in my stash. It came out great. Hope my Local Michael’s has the new colors. Thanks.

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Unfortunately, I believe the new colors were just seasonal!

  • Melissa

    says:

Do I need to use this yarn or can I use super saver? I have a lot of that! I wanted to use up my stash! Thank you!

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

You can use whatever you’d like, but I think that people like cotton for dish cloths because cotton is absorbent?

  • Arlette

    says:

It’s so cute but I have a request. In your videos can you do it slower? Please. I’m just learning and it’s very difficult for me. Thanks

    • TwinkieChan

      says:

Hi! The beauty of the videos is that everyone can pause and re-wind and re-play any portion that they like, and I don’t have to work super slow for a 3-hour long video. I think that would be prohibitive.

  • Sandy

    says:

I was making this cute pattern by printing it out from here as Michael’s did not have any free leaflets left, but the cake portion is missing row 7,9,11,13 & 15. I looked on Pinterest too and cannot find a corrected one to print. Or are the rows just labeled wrong? Help.

    • Sandy

      says:

Whoops! I see it now…Row 3 says “and alt rows” . I watched the video and wrote it all down. Thank you. It turned out great!

      • TwinkieChan

        says:

Was about to reply, but you got it! 🙂 I know they didn’t highlight that very well and it trips up a few people!

Hi, Ms. Twinkie I just wanted to let you know that I completed my second cupcake dishcloth and now I’m confident that I can do a front post stitch on the front part of the cupcake, and since you mentioned to me that about the Lily’s Sugar and Cream yarn and some of the colors that were not available, we’ll I took your advice and picked up the Creme DE LA Creme yarn and it works out just great. So thank you and God bless.
