Don’t Let Me Out of The House…

… cuz I’ll spend more money than usual!!!

Hairy and I had a morning/afternoon in the East Bay today. We don’t venture across the bridge very much, but we had a couple of new places to visit.

First, we were super late to have breakfast with Elysse in Berkeley at Herbivore. She was very gracious about it and was studying her book on parasites. I had a super yummy tofu scramble and felt like I was pregnant with a food-baby the whole day. Then we went with her to visit Emily of BirdMafia who was vending at a little craft event at Knit One One, and I did end up buying something from Emily for my sister in law!

Then we headed over to Oakland where I wanted to check out Phoenix Optical. I’d heard about it after reading a blog entry of Star’s. Her new vintage specs looked awesome so I wanted to check this place out!! I have a really wide face with a strange shape, and apparently most eyeglasses look really bad on me and are too small and make me look like a granny with a pie-face. Cat-eyes glasses? Not on this pumpkin head. So I thought it could be a fun opportunity to check out some eyewear that you don’t see at, like, LensCrafters.

This place was a lot of fun. I didn’t intend to buy anything. I’ll blame Hairy. He is a shopping-pusher! I didn’t have my glasses Rx, cuz the last time I got my eyes checked was in Hong Kong…so I just bought the frames, and they don’t have lenses in them yet. I’m still trying to get used to whether or not I’d be brave enough to rock these everyday:

Hmmm, ehh?

They are pretty weird. They are just kind of thicker than I am used to. I kind of always wanted weird glasses, but I don’t know if I have the cajones to really commit. I will run around the house with them for a bit and see what happens!

They were actually vintage sunglasses, and I asked them to punch out the lenses so I could see what they were like. There was a cute white-framed pair that I wanted to try on, too, but apparently when whey tried to get the lenses out…WITH A HAMMER….the frames broke. That was sad. I felt really bad! But Hairy said if someone else wanted to buy them anyway and get the lenses punched out, they would have broken at that point, too.

Then Hairy wanted to check out Bake Sale Betty. Apparently they have a legendary fried chicken sandwich. There was a line out the door. We got in that line. And got the sandwich. And Hairy said it was really effin good. I was still full from breakfy, so I got a piece of pumpkin pie to go. In fun and unexpected news, Bake Sale Betty is also next to a yarn store, so I picked up some Cascade 220 Wool while we were there!

Then we came home and took an epic nap on the couch with the dogs, and then watched The Lovely Bones with Manda & her friend. I read the book years and years ago and totally don’t remember very much. I only recall that I liked the writing a lot. I don’t so much like depictions of heaven in books or movies a la What Dreams May Come. Overall I thought the movie was…not so great. But I definitely had to see it since I read it.

In conclusion, I also just bought these from Nicole Lindner. She’d sold a pair a little while ago, and I’ve been stalking her ever since, waiting for her to post more!

I’m still going to try really hard to post some Valentine’s Day-themed stuff on Monday or Tuesday. I’m not promising you’ll get your item in time for the big day, but I really think that stuff with hearts all over them are a year-round staple!!!

Those glasses make you look crazy! I love them.

    • I think that’s what my mom would say. Except without the “I love them” part. HAHAH.

OMG! Bake Sale Betty’s = LOVE!!!
i went the last time i was up(when you saw me). The yarn shop is pretty sweet too.

I think the glasses are really cute but i know what you mean by not knowing if you want to wear them every day. i have a collection of slightly loud glasses too. but i wear contacts most of the time and wear glasses at home.

    • I was kinda surprised I couldn’t get a BROWNIE at bake sale betty’s πŸ˜›

I had a very stupid-feeling moment, when I asked Hairy, “Do these glasses look like…TWINKIE CHAN!?” ahhahhahah…. that’s kinda sad.

I gotta say you rock those glasses like no one else could πŸ™‚
They suit your face and make you look like a cute cartoon!

I am trying to embrace your cartoon comment! πŸ˜‰

I LOVE those glasses! I just bought some crazy frames of my own, still trying to decide if i can pull them off or if I look like a crazy in them. They’re electric bluey/turquoise wayfarer shapes.

You look great in yours, by the way, I say go for it! I’ll be awaiting the v-day products πŸ˜€

    • I am sure they are cute!! I find that the wayfarer shape is quite flattering (in a delightfully dorky way) on a lot of face shapes and people!

  • Jules

    says:

You look rad in those glasses! RAD.
I have the same face shape/head shape (!?) as you and I find the same problem with finding glasses too! I also have this annoying habit of having to dorkily push my glasses up my nose all the time πŸ˜› My flat nose bridge doesn’t give much for the glasses to hold onto!

I want to branch out with new frames too to fit my personality (have boring, safe gunmetal grey frames with no frame at the bottom bit) but in the UK it’s little choice xx

    • Yes, I definitely have to push my glasses up, too!! There are some plastic/silicone inserts that I got in Hong Kong once that helped keep them stable, but they fall apart after a while, and I ran out!

You can always look online for vintage frames, like on Etsy, but then you don’t get to try them on!

    I adore Your frames!
I use to buy ONLY big frames…especially sunglasses really 70’s!

    • It’s usually hard for me to find cute, big frames here, so I guess vintage is the way to go!

  • i think the glasses are awesome!

  • I’m a bit jealous of the frames. When I got my last pair I went in with “Elvis Costello” in mind. None quite made it though so I just went purple instead.

If you decide you don’t want them, keep me in mind please.

      says:

Hehe I will! They are GIANT.

    says:

Love the frames. Don’t think I could pull off anything that big, but I think you definitely could!

I’m waiting to see The Lovely Bones, doesn’t come out here for another week or so. I loved the book but have heard the movie isn’t so great. I’m still gonna check it out though, ha.

    says:

UM YES!! those frames are awesome. i think it’s pretty funny that you are afraid to rock them…i mean this in the best way but look at you! you have pink hair, ice cream and cupcake tattoos, you always wear bright clothes; SO many people would be ‘afraid’ to rock that look…you can rock anything girl!! and these frames are wonderful. you’d be crazy not too; really!! and they blend in…i mean, you have black in your hair and darker features…if someone who wasn’t so vibrant were to wear them, then they should be afraid to wear them but not you!!

    • Twinkie Chan!

      says:

Hehe someone else made a similar comment! I guess you kind of get used to one weird thing about yourself at a time. There’s always a bit of a transition period until you look in the mirror and don’t even think about it!

    Hi Twinkie!
I have been a silent reader for years and just want to say congrats on your new shop opening up. It’s pretty awesome to remember back when I first found your website and you inspired me to start crocheting (which only lasted a month before I couldn’t take it anymore). Not only that but you inspire many people in a lot of different ways! Thanks for all the great visuals you have been giving us for so long and I can’t wait for more great work from you in the near future!

    • Twinkie Chan!

      says:

Thank you so very much for your sweet comment!!!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I can’t wait to show you guys more!

    says:

Those frames are awesome! You shouldn’t be afraid to rock’em. They are totally part of your charm!

At least you can put up with pushing them up all the time. =)

I have a self imposed rule to never purchase glasses without the nose pads because of my absent nose bridge. I find glasses sitting on my cheeks more than I can handle. That means cool frames are few/far inbetween.

    • Twinkie Chan!

      says:

Oh I HATE when glasses sit on your cheeks!!!!

There is something amazing about the way these glasses fit. They sort of sit at the join between my nose and cheek, but very close to the nose, so I think it’s the same as if they were hitting my nose a little higher up like normal. Most of my cheek is still free!

  • chinamommy

    says:

I heart the new frames & am wondering why a girlie with pink hair & a peeps tattoo thinks the glasses may draw attention?? Hee,hee-you crack me up! My 6 year old is Chinese & just had to get glasses-so hard w/ that tiny nose!!

    • Twinkie Chan!

      says:

Some companies like Louis Vuitton are starting to make glasses for Asians!!! HAHA and they DO fit better…it’s weird!

  • SCORE on the glasses, girl! πŸ˜€ β™₯ β™₯ β™₯ them! i thought mine were a teeny bit bold…there was another pair i wanted but they were gone when i came bk the next week. :'( that, was also sad.

the pair i reallyyy wanted were looked a lot like some Audrey Hepburn sunnies i’ve seen before…at least i’m thinking it was Audrey…:)

i think you can totally rock those bad boys! πŸ˜‰

    • Twinkie Chan!

      says:

hehhe thanks Ellen. I am slowly trying to embrace them as MINE!

  • Michelle

    says:
